This Python script is basically an implementation of converting an infix expression to postfix and vice-versa. Though, it may not be directly useful considering that you wouldn't actually use it to evaluate expressions, but the script illustrates the implementation of the algorithm; i.e. how expressions are actually evaluated.

Thus, the script would be useful in understanding the implementation of the algorithm.

Shortification. Boiling down to the essentials I get this from your script

prio = {'^':5, '*':4,'/':4,'+':3,'-':3,'(':2,')':1}

def topostfix(infix_src):
postfix = list()
stack = list()
for x in shlex.shlex( infix_src ):
if x.isdigit():
postfix.append(x)
if x in '+-*/^':
while len( stack ) and prio[x] <= prio[ stack[-1]]:
postfix.append( stack.pop() )
stack.append(x)
if x == '(':
stack.append(x)
if x == ')':
while stack[-1] != '(':
postfix.append(stack.pop())
stack.pop()

while len(stack):
if(stack[-1] == "("):
stack.pop()
else:
postfix.append( stack.pop() )

return postfix

Your algorithm works so far, but not for expressions like -1-2 or 3*-1

any idea how to fix this?
