Besides providing an easy and flexible way to generate syntax highlighted python source code, this recipe also serves as a nice demonstration of how to use argparse and tokenize.

This code is simple enough to be easily customized. It has no external dependencies. For a more full featured syntax highlighter, see http://pygments.org/

For command-line use, add #! /usr/bin/env python2.7 or #! /usr/bin/env python3.2 as you prefer. Then make the code executable with something like chmod +x highlight.py.

Here are some examples of command-line use:

# Show syntax highlighted code in the terminal window
$ ./highlight.py myfile.py

# Colorize myfile.py and display in a brower
$ ./highlight.py -b myfile.py

# Create an HTML section that can be embedded in an existing webpage.
./highlight.py -s myfile.py

# Create a complete HTML file
$ ./highlight.py -c myfile.py > myfile.html

# Create a PDF using LaTeX
$ ./highlight.py -l myfile.py | pdflatex
