Python Program to READ & WRITE Spss system files (.sav) (Linux,Mac or Windows)

  • Check https://pypi.python.org/pypi/savReaderWriter/ for the latest version (including the libraries!)
  • Requires libspssdio.so.1 (LINUX) or libspssdio.dylib (MAC) or spssio32.dll (WINDOWS) plus associated libaries, which can be freely downloaded from: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/We70df3195ec8_4f95_9773_42e448fa9029/page/Downloads%20for%20IBM%C2%AE%20SPSS%C2%AE%20Statistics?lang=en
  • It is recommended to download the v21 I/O files (required for writing zlib (.zsav) compressed files)
  • December 2012 (complete rewrite):
  • Added support for slicing, indexing, array slicing + other special methods
  • Added support for writing spss date fields
  • Added support for almost all meta data (missing values, sets, roles, etc.)
  • Added support for 64 bit Windows (tested with Win7) and other OSs (z/Linux, Solaris, HP Linux, IBM AIX (untested though)
  • Added support for reading and writing zlib compressed (.zsav) files
  • Removed pesky segfault error when freeing memory
  • Removed errors related to encoding
  • Changed some Reader defaults (verbose=False, returnHeader=False)
  • Renamed SavDataDictionaryReader into SavHeaderReader

LINUX:

Installation (tested on Linux Ubuntu 10):

  • additional packages/files needed are: intel-icc8-libs_8.0-1_i386.deb,libicu32_3.2-3_i386.deb, libstdc++5_3.3.6-20_i386.deb, libirc.so.
  • Run the following commands in your terminal: sudo apt-get install intel-icc8-libs; sudo apt-get install libicu32; sudo apt-get install libstdc++5.
  • Then convert libirc.a (static) to libirc.so (dynamic), save in same location as libspssdio.so.1: ar vx intel-icc8-libs_8.0-1_i386.deb; tar -xzvf data.tar.gz ./usr/lib/libirc.a; ar -x libirc.a.

Calling the program:

  • In the TERMINAL type: export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/path/of/additional/sofiles; python /some/path/wrapperToProgram.py. You may also add ld_library_path to .bashrc
  • The wrapper starts with "from SavReaderWriter import *", followed by e.g. stuff from the if __name__ == '__main__' section

MAC OS:

  • you must put all the dylib files that come with the IBM SPSS_Statistics_InputOutput_Modules_* package in the macos directory somewhere that OS X can find them
  • one simple way to accomplish this is to copy them to /usr/lib

WINDOWS:

  • You can also find this dll in the installation directory of SPSS (although SPSS is _not_ needed!)
  • The .dll should be saved in the same location as this program.

USAGE: See docstrings + __main__ section

## January 2013:
# changed implementation of freeMemory method (again!)

## December 2012:
# -Added support for slicing, indexing, array slicing + other special methods
# -Added support for writing spss date fields
# -Added support for almost all meta data (missing values, sets, roles, etc.)
# -Added support for 64 bit Windows (tested with Win7) and other OSs
# (z/Linux, Solaris, HP Linux, IBM AIX (untested though)
# -Added support for reading and writing zlib compressed (.zsav) files
# -Removed pesky segfault error when freeing memory
# -Removed errors related to encoding
# -Removed error that prevented files originating from big-endian systems
# being read properly in little-endian systems (and vice versa)
# -Changed some Reader defaults (verbose=False, returnHeader=False)
# -Renamed SavDataDictionaryReader into SavHeaderReader

    Parameters:
-savFileName: the file name of the spss data file
-returnHeader: Boolean that indicates whether the first record should
be a list of variable names (default = False)
-recodeSysmisTo: indicates to which value missing values should
        be recoded (default = None),
-selectVars: indicates which variables in the file should be selected.
The variables should be specified as a list or a tuple of
valid variable names. If None is specified, all variables
in the file are used (default = None)
-idVar: indicates which variable in the file should be used for use as id
variable for the 'get' method (default = None)
-verbose: Boolean that indicates whether information about the spss data
file (e.g., number of cases, variable names, file size) should be
printed on the screen (default = False).
-rawMode: Boolean that indicates whether values should get SPSS-style
formatting, and whether date variables (if present) should be converted
to ISO-dates. If True, the program does not format any values, which
increases processing speed. (default = False)
-ioUtf8: indicates the mode in which text communicated to or from the
I/O Module will be. Valid values are True (UTF-8 mode aka Unicode mode)
and False (Codepage mode). Cf. SET UNICODE=ON/OFF (default = False)
-ioLocale: indicates the locale of the I/O module. Cf. SET LOCALE (default
= None, which corresponds to locale.getlocale()[0])

This is just outstanding work. Looking forward to diving deeper into. I especially appreciate the new Linux functionality.

Can anybody she some light on where libspssdio.so.1 can be found? All of the I/O packages from IBM do not include this file. It seems this is some sort of secret that the internet does not hold.

The files you need are fairly big (28.4Mb zipped, for MacOS alone). If you create a login here: https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/iwm/web/preLogin.do?source=swg-tspssp ... next, AFTER you've loged in, follow this link: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home/wiki/We70df3195ec8_4f95_9773_42e448fa9029/page/Downloads%2520for%2520IBM%25C2%25AE%2520SPSS%25C2%25AE%2520Statistics?lang=en Then follow the link in the bullet "The modules matching Statistics versions 18 and 19 are available here."

That should do the trick. I know, that IBM website is the single most UNergonomic thing on the internet. ;-)

Hi Albert,

Thanks for the code.

I was running into some unicode issues (the .sav file was from Brazil if that matters) and had to change line 823 from varLabel = unicode(varLabel, "utf-8") to varLabel = unicode(varLabel, "utf-8", errors='ignore')

Albert-Jan Roskam (author) 11 years, 11 months ago  # | flag

@ Sandip: Thanks for the correction. I'll update it.

@ All: By popular demand I created a torrent file of the spssio files (they are not easy to find on the IBM website and it's allowed to distribute them). You can download it [HERE] Please do NOT delete the zipfile after downloading it. That is: please SEED.

Lines 910 - 912 crashed for me on Windows 7 too (not just Linux). If you're getting crashes on Windows trying to read the data dictionary you might want to try commenting these 3 lines out in the getValueLabels(self, varName) method:

if sys.platform.lower().startswith("win"):
   self.spssio.spssFreeVarNValueLabels(valuesPtr, labelsPtr, numLabels)
   self.spssio.spssFreeVarCValueLabels(valuesPtr, labelsPtr, numLabels)
Albert-Jan Roskam (author) 11 years, 8 months ago  # | flag

Hi,

Thanks for pointing that out. I have never tried this code on Win 7 myself. I outcommented the lines you mention --they've given me headache before already =)

I also added a small method that allows the number of records to be easily obtained: <pre><code>print "The file contains %d records" % ( len(SavReader(savFileName)) ) </code></pre>

PS: somebody from a Slavian country emailed me that varnames with chars outside the ascii range won't always work. Sorry.

RE Crashing WRT spssFreeVar#ValueLabels:

clean up (dunno yet why this crashes under Linux)

    # also crashes under Win 7. Outcoment if you dare ;-)
    #if sys.platform.lower().startswith("win"):
    # self.spssio.spssFreeVarNValueLabels(valuesPtr, labelsPtr, numLabels)
    # self.spssio.spssFreeVarCValueLabels(valuesPtr, labelsPtr, numLabels)

I suspect if you don't use these APIs you may end up with a rather difficult to detect memory leak.
OTOH. You can NOT just outright call them unconditionally. You need to call the appropriate function dependent upon whether you are extracting value labels for a Numeric or String variable. In this case assume you have worked with a numeric variable. It probably does fine to the point of spssFreeVarNValueLabels but then bites the big one when it attempts to free unallocated memory with the additional call to spssFreeVarCValueLabels. I wrote a fairly comprehensive wrapper for the IODLL about 15 years ago and the total ball buster was the value label routines. I did finally solve it using some clever calls to CopyMemory and a few other tricks. These APIs are supposedly not supported in VB... (Well, I studied Bruce McKinney and Matt Curland's books)!!! HAHAHA ..

You're right David those spssFree* functions suck! I had a hard time getting this to work under each OS. I only tested the last version under Linnu XP and Linux Ubuntu now.

Hi Albert,

Thank you for sharing. Could you please give us the Wrapper example? When I try to execute the program, it keeps saying:

"File "./wrapper.py", line 1, in <module> from SavReaderWriter import * ImportError: No module named SavReaderWriter"

Thanks in advance

Albert-Jan Roskam (author) 11 years, 1 month ago  # | flag

Hi,

It seems that Python does not know where to look for savReaderWriter.py. You can first do import sys sys.path.append("/path/to/whereever/you/saved/the/readerwriter") from savReaderWriter import *

Alternatively, you can use one of the installers from: https://pypi.python.org/pypi/savReaderWriter/ That version is also slightly newer.
