Python whois utility which looks up records in the databases maintained by severa Network Information Centers (NICs). Functions exactly like the UNIX whois(1) utility.

Callable from the command-line, but also has an function entry point for calling from code.

Refactored to collect global defs and functions into an object, "NICClient" for better integration into other code. (original 'C' code was not OO)

Tested to work with python-2.4 on MacOSX-10.5 and Windows XP

Awesome recipe - worked perfectly - exactly the way the command line version works - no dependencies - much better than pywhois which cannot do Network whois lookups. Very easy to incorporate into any script and call the class directly.

PS - tested with python 2.7.1 for mac, and 2.6 for windows.

In order to get the right NIC for reverse lookups (network WHOIS) - I had to make a few changes. Theres probably a better way to do this but basically I noticed that the class is designed to check ARIN for all network lookups - lookups done for a TLD which is a number (or IP address). Instead of modifying that class to know how to lookup differently, I modified the __main__ section to have a preliminary lookup, and then change whois servers in a second lookup if needed. This way you don't get email addresses like 'search-apnic-not-arin@whois.net' in the WHOIS information. Please advise as to improvements that could be recommended to improve the structure of the code - and the efficiency of the logic.
