Thanks to all who replied. For the record, what I was looking for was
the environment variable PERL5SHELL. Easy when you know how.
The bad news is that despite running under bash, backticks still sets
$? to -1 on Win9x.
The good news is that ActiveState have acknowledged this as a bug -
modules/188 in their Bug Tracker (also more recently as incoming/683).
I guess I'll have to install manually until a patch is released (or
more likely hack about MM_WIN32 to hardcode the location of my
perl.exe).
