A good compromise I guess, is to keep the general idea of a string
-state rather than a boolean -connecting, and only define (within the
scope of #427) the obvious ones: connecting, ready, error. This leaves
an obvious path for extension.

Refinements like (half)closed et al will definitely need more
bikeshed^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hthinking.
